Occupied cinema is a film about guerrilla action initiated by young activists taking over privatized cinema Zvezda in Belgrade, Serbia. This activity united various social groups that shared the same ambition – to change the reality in which they live. However, their views about how that reality should look like were not the same.

For 40 years, Danish architect Jan Gehl has studied human behavior in cities, starting with what he calls “Life Between Buildings.” Gehl has documented how modern cities repel human interaction and argues that we can build cities in a way that takes human needs for inclusion and intimacy into account. In Copenhagen, Gehl has inspired the creation of pedestrian streets and bike paths and the organization of parks, squares and other public spaces throughout the city.

A creaky – voiced woman confides her personal account of the Armenian genocide. A sweetly deluded pianist performs a composition before confessing his love. A blind photographer fiddles with his flash as he points his own camera back at us. Shevaun Mizrahi’s playful, immaculately controlled film finds hypnotizing rhythms in the residents’ limbo-like state. Meanwhile, outside, ominous construction equipment transforms the land.

Siblings Cemal, Kenan and Suzi have grown apart since leaving the tiny village where they grew up. When an unexpected call from their estranged father demands they return to the village immediately, Cemal is tasked with convincing his brother and sister to take the road trip. As they try to piece the dysfunctional family back together and confront their past, they’ll have to contend with each other’s peculiarities and get to know one another again, even as the strangest elements of all await them in the village. Film won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival and was a part of Voices programme at Rotterdam Film Festival.

In the way she carries herself, 18-year-old Aneta barely differs from the boys. Because of this and an uncomfortable cell phone recording doing the rounds, she and her only friend are mocked as “lesbians”. This destroys their friendship. Meanwhile, Aneta also has to deal with family problems. Her father is slowly losing his battle with cancer. When his TV breaks down, his suffering seems to increase. Aneta comes up with an idea. She has to convince the village priest to let her participate in a centuries-old all-male church ritual. If allowed to take part, she will have to battle the savage high school bullies. The prizes range from the spiritual (good health and blessings) to the lucrative (a brand new flat screen).
